DEVELOPING PUBLIC COMMUNICATION METHODS BY COMBINING SCIENCE, CREATIVE ARTS AND INTERGENERATIONAL INFLUENCE: THE TRACE PROJECT

E-waste is one of the fastest growing global waste streams. As e-waste accumulates scientists struggle to communicate scientific findings and concepts effectively expediently public in a way that raises awareness inspires discussions. The TRACE (TRAnsitioning Circular Economy with creative artists) project was collaboration between scientists, artists primary schoolchildren develop new ways about e-waste. It combined i) intergenerational influence ii) music / art raise awareness, educate provoke discussion. Two musical performances by two exhibitions professional artist were created evoke emotional responses e-waste, particularly imbuing personality through anthropomorphism their songs artwork. Key indicate raised audiences, artists, schoolchildren, caregivers due involvement project; 99% audience reported rise issues; 70% participants indicated an intention change disposal; 65% reuse repair behaviour. Audiences demonstrated strong reactions alongside behavioural intent. degree which raised, its intensity, demonstrates viability use arts as tools environmental issues effectively. consequently won prestigious 2021 UK National Recycling Award for (communication) Campaign Year (Large).
